Robinhood 24 Hour Market Reaches $10B+ in Total Volume Traded Overnight

On our busiest days, as much as 25% of the total daily trading volume has come from outside of traditional market hours

Last year, Robinhood became the first US retail brokerage to offer 24/5 trading of single name stocks when we launched the Robinhood 24 Hour Market. The news cycle, world events, and market moving events like earnings often happen outside of US East Coast business hours. With 24 Hour Market, customers finally have the flexibility and convenience to invest on their own timelines – not Wall Street’s.

We believe the future of investing is here, and it’s around the clock. Over the past several weeks and months, we’ve seen a significant shift in 24 Hour Market trading activity and a notable increase in adoption by Robinhood customers outside of traditional market hours. Here are some key highlights:

  • Since launching the Robinhood 24 Hour Market less than a year ago, customers have traded more than $10B in total volume during the overnight session.*
  • On our busiest days, as much as 25% of the total daily trading volume has come from outside of traditional market hours.**
  • The average daily trading volume for the overnight session* has grown every month since September 2023.
  • February had the highest average daily trading volume for the overnight session* of any month since launch. February volume was 1.6x higher than January, 2x higher than December, and 2.6x higher than November.
  • The single biggest trading day in terms of overnight* volume was the evening of March 3 into the morning of March 4.

In February we expanded the total number of symbols available overnight in the US to 922 (you can view the full list here). Using 24 Hour Market, people can place limit orders to buy whole shares of some of the most traded ETFs and individual stocks 24 hours a day, five days a week. 24 Hour Market lets customers invest when they want, on their schedule. Trading hours run from 8:00 pm ET on Sunday to 8:00 pm ET on Friday.

Here’s how to access the Robinhood 24 Hour Market in-app:

  1. Select your stock or ETF. Stocks and ETFs that are tradable 24 hours will be differentiated in-app. A 24 Hour Market list will also show the 922 stocks and ETFs that can be traded. This list includes many of the most popular symbols by trading volume.
  2. Name your price. Customers can place 24 Hour Market orders in the Limit Order flow. As a first step, customers type in the maximum price they would pay for the security – or the minimum price they would sell for.
  3. Set trading hours and time in force. Select the 24 Hour Market trading session and choose when a limit order should be executed by, or expire.
  4. Select number of shares. After selecting how many shares they’d like to buy, traders will see a summary of the order, including the limit price, time in force, and total estimated cost. Swipe to submit, and the trade is submitted!

The Robinhood 24 Hour Market levels the playing field so after hours trading is no longer exclusively reserved for those operating in US East Coast hours. We’re excited to see the response from customers so far, and proud to give them the access they need to invest on their own time.
